Review of Idiom Attack Vol. 1 Everyday Living (French Edition)
Through his clear three-step process, Peter Liptak conquers the main aspects of idioms for everyday living, outlining their meanings, confirming their use, and ultimately putting them into practice. This work of non-fiction is easy to work through on your own, has great clarity and is highly-beneficial for any native English-speaker – it will also help native speakers of foreign languages to get to grips with common English expressions and help them to learn to incorporate them into everyday language.
The author provides excerpts/ stories for the reader to fill in the blanks and questions thereafter to ensure that the reader has properly understood the text and gained the maximum benefit from it. Crosswords have also, rather cleverly, been incorporated throughout the book, which is perfect for providing readers with a challenge should they wish for one. Not only does this help the reader to exercise newly-learnt idioms, but it can also help them to learn the correct spelling, as well as to exercise the brain in a healthy, natural way. Furthermore, the writer explores twenty-five key areas of conversation that are all very useful topics to be able to navigate as they frequently come up in the English language. Some of these topics include, but are not limited to: common expressions used to discuss the weather, telephone talk, going shopping, housework, and general descriptions and explanations. Whatever a person’s relationship with the English language, idioms will inevitably make an appearance, proving this book to be an invaluable resource.
The Idiom Attack Vol. 1 Everyday Living (French Edition) provides synonyms, crosswords, and an index - as well as crossword answers - at the back. This is a French edition, in which the French itself is clean and polished, easily comprehensible. If you are a native French-speaker with limited or no knowledge of the English language, this book is a brilliant place to start. The idioms throughout the book are provided in English, with English definitions, and a French translation is also given.
Overall, this book is engaging and educational. It is well structured, all the examples provided are clear and correct, and the language – both the French and the English – is perfectly accessible. I believe a professional editor was involved in the shaping of this book as I could find no errors whatsoever, in spelling, grammar, language or otherwise. For all these reasons, I believe a rating of 4 out of 4 stars is more than fit for this book.
I recommend this book to readers of all ages, particularly students and native speakers of foreign languages who wish to educate themselves in the common English expressions known as idioms. This would also be good for children who do not speak English as a native as all the content is appropriate and clean.
