Review of Defining Moments of a Free Man from a Black Stream
Frank L Douglas is a free soul that was born through a body and into a world with limitations. These limitations include being black, a poor family, broken home and so on. Throughout his stages of growth, he was faced with challenges that he responded to knowledgeably, hence, the person he is today. The person he is proud enough to be to tell to other people as well.
Time is money, heals all wounds, especially those of the heart, and provides responses to the unanswered questions we have that keep lingering in our minds. The conditions he grew up in were not that suitable, the way he viewed himself worsened, especially socially. Thankfully, every challenge presented itself with a solution and why it just had to be overlooked. For example, the bitter relation between him and his mother, Mr. Sangar Davis' character, et cetera. Defining Moments of a Free Man from a Black Stream is an autobiography of Frank L Douglas.
In this book, he highlights both his actions and reactions, how certain happenings made him stronger and victorious, enchancement of his mentality, inspirations, aspirations and so on. At first when I started reading, I was almost filled with fright because I thought this is another book that tells about the ill-mannered ways of the whites towards the blacks. But no, this is a book about some of the persons who helped others to challenge themselves in order to turn out better than they expected. Here, a person uses an unacceptable way to bring out the best from that person. I glad and feel more hopeful with such facts.
I loved this story because I found it very interesting. I thank the author for sharing his experiences with us, because they instilled more hope, faith, and believe that not all whites are bad, everyone who behaves differently from how we expect them to is necessary bad. I have to always work hard at everything that I want, to gain from it fruitfully. The language, in some instances, is strong and hard because of the nature of events the author is relaying to us. I also noticed a few mistakes. I loved the author and considered him to be my favorite character in this story. This is because he is strong, kind, gentle, hardworking, and above all placed his faith in God, no matter the challenge or situation. I disliked characters such as the author's aunt because of her biased ways and behaviors. Because of what I have stated above, I rate this book 4 out of 4 stars.
This book let us into a unique world where the good in whites is well highlighted and the wrongs of the blacks pointed out. It fills me with hope, and is also non-fiction in nature. I, therefore, recommend it to those aged fifteen years and above who find such stories interesting. I also recommend it to those who consider themselves freedom fighters against racism, students and lovers of History.
