Review of A Dream For Peace
A Dream For Peace is a memoir written by Dr Ghoulem Berrah. The book is about the life story of Dr Ghoulem and his fight against racial discrimination and for the freedom of blacks, especially those of his home country, Algeria. The book has seventeen chapters and 601 pages.
Dr Ghoulem was born in Ain Beida in northeastern Algeria, at a time in which the French government annexed Algeria. The people of Algeria were suffering from acute racism and victimisation in their own country and beyond. Dr Ghoulem attended an indigenous school that has most of its teachers as French nationals. They were given solid and qualitative education using a syllabus that was devoid of Algerian heritage. He was part of the best five that enrolled in the “cours complementaire,” which was a four-year syllabus that was attended by a majority of French students. While in school, he suffered his share of maltreatment and racism, which helped bring out the anti-colonialist instincts in him. His journey to France to study medicine brought out his passion to fight racism to the fullest peacefully.
The author included various personal quotes at the beginning of each chapter, which help prepare and paint the picture of his experience discussed in those chapters. The author allowed readers to experience some of his childhood experiences and even the practices of his people before he was born. This was informative and educative to read. He also provided a detailed history of his family, which allowed us to understand his background and how that affects his choices and decisions. The author believed in people of all races living together peacefully without victimisation and racism. The author believed in people of all races living together peacefully without victimisation and racism. Reading this book serves as an inspiration to always pursue what you believed in. The book was written in a way that made readers understand and follow the story without getting bored. The book was a lengthy read, but it pulled me in because of the way the author used his words and presented the story. The author included some pictures to allow readers to follow the story in text and graphically. All these made me like this book.
The things I disliked were few. The author sometimes used complex words in this book, and it slows down the reading pace. I sometimes had to use the dictionary to understand some words. This did not affect the quality of the book. It was still interesting, educative and inspiring.
I will rate this book 4 out of 4 stars as it was a perfect read. It was professionally edited with only a minor error noticed. I will recommend this book to lovers of memoirs with a lot to learn about peace.
