Mended by the Master Volume I by Priscella Lewis is a compilation of 86 moving written pieces, some being poems. Lewis was abused as a child, and she also abused substances, but she eventually found the love of Christ, which helped her to find peace and a blissful heart. In the pages of this book, the author's meaningful words show the grace of God. She uses some vivid examples from American pop culture, her life, and many Bible passages to show how transformative the love of Christ is. The free-flowing poems also had themes of thankfulness, surrendering to Christ, and perfect healing.

The author, instead of using chapters, titled her pieces using days: “Day 1 to Day 86.” While I would have appreciated clear dates of when Lewis wrote each poem, I appreciated her chosen format because it allowed me to take things slowly and soak up her words. She wrote with soulfulness and kindness. Lewis made statements directed to the reader like, “If you are willing, God can lift you up.” By writing in a conversational and flowing manner, her proclamations of God’s love seemed more direct and impactful, which I appreciated.

This book does not focus on the author’s personal experiences. I thought that making her personal stories take a back seat to the Word of God showed that she followed the inspiration of the Holy Spirit. I enjoyed the Bible stories that she told, including the story of the woman with the issue of blood who received healing because of her immense faith. Even though I already knew of most of the stories, the author put them in a new light that convinced me of God’s love. I also loved that the poems had decipherable meaning, rhyme, and rhythm, and they followed the established themes of the book.

The author’s tone was light and kind, even though she addressed the important topic of salvation. She only focused on God’s love. Even when she mentioned that we should seek God in all we do, she was not malicious. I appreciated the author's positivity, but I wished she used more personal stories. Without a lot of personal stories, some of the pieces seemed unmemorable. I also wished the pieces were longer; most of them were short and ended just when they were leaving an impact on me. This book, excluding its poems, read like devotional.

This book seemed like a professionally edited one, but I found over ten minor errors that can be corrected with another round of editing. The author focused her writing on positivity and love, so this book may not suit cynical readers who have a lot of questions about Christianity; the book is not a deep dive into Christianity. I recommend the book, however, to readers who want to be reminded of God’s love in their life and want to strengthen their faith. The book can be read like a devotional, with one piece read each day for 86 days or more. I rate this book 3 out of 4, removing one star only because it needs another round of editing.
