Review of Bitcoin Answered
Bitcoin Answered by Jon Law is a very didactical and interesting book that has the goal of disentangling the fragmented web of information around Bitcoin. It is structured in questions and answers and covers just about everything you would like to know about the subject. It is a very easy read and thoroughly understandable even if you have no prior knowledge about Bitcoin - it was my case, so I am living proof.
In that sense, the most positive feature of the book is how accessible it is. Jon Law successfully explains the scope of Bitcoin, digital currencies, blockchains, and everything else you need to understand this phenomenon in many short but effective topics. You do not need any prior knowledge in economics or technology to understand it, and I believe the information in Bitcoin Answered serves people of all fields of knowledge, whether they are interested in investing or just keeping up with current events. It even has a section titled “How would you explain Bitcoin to a 5 years old?”. I also appreciate that even though Jon Law is a clear enthusiast of Bitcoin, the book couldn’t be further from propaganda: the author is upfront and meticulous in every discussion, not shying away from hard questions.
One negative aspect of the book for me is that if there is any logic to the sequence in which the topics are presented, it is lost on me. The author presents a topic, for example, Bitcoin mining, in the first quarter of the book and then proceeds to address various other topics before returning to explain who are the Bitcoin miners. Even the topic I have previously mentioned “How would you explain Bitcoin to a 5 years old?” only appears on page 34, after many other more complex topics have been discussed. I believe Bitcoin Answered would benefit from addressing the topics that are related in blocks of similar subjects.
I rate Bitcoin Answered 4 out of 4 stars because I have found it to be a very informative book that can be appreciated by many different publics. I admire Jon Law’s ability to write about such a complex issue as Bitcoin in such a didactical manner and still write a book that might just as well interest people who have previous knowledge on Bitcoin and simply have doubt on a particular topic. The way the book is structured allows the reader to only read the parts that are more interesting for them due to their field of work or type of investment. I do not give it a lower rating because I have truly enjoyed the book and feel that I have understood the universe of Bitcoin for the first time thanks to it, despite having attempted to grasp it in the past.
Finally, I would recommend this book mainly to the people who are starting their journey in understanding - or maybe even buying - bitcoins. It is an excellent starting point and it provides the reader with many references like books, podcasts, news services, YouTube channels, and bibliographic references if you wish to continue searching. Despite that being the audience I believe would benefit the most, I do believe people who already have previous knowledge will also enjoy it because it tackles the issues with a lot of complexity.
