Review of A Dream For Peace
A Dream For Peace is a memoir about Dr. Ghoulem Berrah: a freedom fighter and a passionate activist for peace. As a young scientist in the United States, Dr. Ghoulem Berrah made an important discovery about cancer in the 1960s and was elected an active member of the New York Academy of Sciences. Dr. Ghoulem Berrah, who rejected his French nationality and "vanquished" his Algerian nationality by fighting a war, was eventually made a citizen of Côte d'Ivoire and a diplomatic adviser and special counselor to President Houphouët Boigny. Though raised in Algeria, his impact was felt in different parts of the world, especially his home continent—Africa. Dr. Ghoulem Berrah's various noteworthy engagements in medicine and politics took him through the borders of France, USA, Co ̂te d’Ivoire, China, Egypt, Saudi Arabia, and several other countries.
It was exciting and surreal to read about Dr. Ghoulem Berrah's conversations and meetings with the presidents of different countries, including Gaddafi himself. As a Muslim who married a Christian, the author's view about religion is quite exemplary and inspirational. The world would be so much better and more peaceful if every religion and group had members as tolerant of others as Dr. Ghoulem Berrah. It was also inspiring that he encouraged some world leaders to choose the path of dialogue and supported the views of selfless characters, like Nelson Mandela.
The vivid descriptions and the black and white pictures in the book make it a pleasure to visualize its events. A Dream For Peace combines the thrill-filled experience of an adventurous soul and the skillfulness of a master storyteller. Prepare to be deeply immersed in a rich account of different cultures—whether it's the unique fabric that was produced exclusively for the royal people of the Ashanti tribe or the cooked and mashed fava beans, vegetable oil, and cumin of the Egyptian national dish.
Readers who love political and historical memoirs would enjoy A Dream For Peace. The book contains important messages about living with and accepting people with different beliefs and backgrounds. The pages remind us that war is never a pleasurable reality and that getting to know and interact with one's enemies might completely change one's views about them. Though the long length of the book might scare some readers away, there are no boring moments throughout its 644 pages.
I liked every aspect of A Dream For Peace because it balances an impressive supply of information, intriguing stories, and profound messages. I appreciated the book's impressive and neat editing as I found no error in it. Since I disliked nothing about the book and I enjoyed reading and learning from it, I rate it 4 out of 4 stars. That it is one of the most epic memoirs I have come across ensures a much deserved return!
