Dr. Ghoulem Berrah grew up in Algeria while the country was still under colonial French rule, and he would be among those that would feel the brunt of oppressive colonial ideals all through his childhood. While attending university, he would join like-minded people with the goals of dismantling the colonial system and liberating the Algerian people. Many obstacles would lay in his path, but Dr. Berrah's dedication to his goals would eventually lead him into the official service as a diplomat and advisor to the late Ivorian president Felix Houphouet-Boigny.

A Dream for Peace is a moving memoir about the life of Ghoulem Berrah, and his inspirational actions as a freedom fighter in his youth, and then a diplomat in his later years. All through his life, Dr. Berrah would remain steadfast to his goals, and his faith, even in the face of overwhelming adversity. He would work with other countries in a bid to foster peace, as well as strengthen Afro-Arabic relations in the continent, and, promoting religious unity would be just another one of the Doctor's numerous contributions to society.

His story is a relevant recollection about the struggles African countries went through in order to gain independence, and this book leaves no questions unanswered, as it details every major step in Algeria's own fight for independence. Pictures are even included to further contextualise some of these events and put some faces to the names in Dr. Berrah's life.

I can't think of a single thing I didn't like about this book. The writing was very neat and easy to understand and I really enjoyed the moving prologue by H. E. Monsignor Justo Mullor Garcia at the beginning of the book. I didn't notice any major distracting errors either, so the read was smooth and enjoyable. With all this in mind, my rating of A Dream for Peace is 4 out of 4 stars.

It was an excellent read and I highly recommend this book to people interested in accounts of national independence, the effects of colonisation on a society, as well as the struggles of the people involved in making necessary changes in such societies. This is an informative book about an inspirational man with a vision and the faith and determination to see such a vision through.

Note, however, that this book is over 600 pages long, and not exactly a piece of entertainment, so it might only appeal to readers with certain tastes, but those interested in books like this will find this one very enjoyable.
