Have you recently become the caregiver or permanent guardian to your grandchild? Are you feeling lost in your new role? Have you spent many sleepless nights worrying about your and your grandchild’s future? If you have answered yes to any of these questions: So, You’re Raising Your Grandkids!: Tested Tips, Research, & Real-Life Stories to Make Your Life Easier by Harriet Hodgson is the relief you are seeking. Our author, having lost her daughter to a car accident, was thrust into parenthood to look after twin teenagers. In addition to losing her daughter, she lost her ex-son-in-law, father-in-law, and brother, all within six months. This book is a fantastic testament to resiliency and strength. Hodgson explores how to cope with raising a grandchild unexpectedly. She guides you through the process of how to handle your grief, as well as your grandchild’s, with an emphasis on the fact that even if your grandchild’s parents are alive, you are still experiencing the loss of expectations you had for your life. In addition, she explores how to communicate with your grandchildren on an age-appropriate level about this new challenging situation. This book will help you navigate how to help a child experiencing behavioral problems. Interspersed with her story, she backs her claims up using the latest research in childhood developmental studies.

Harriet Hodgson is an amazingly talented writer whose personal story hits you on a deep emotional level. By sharing her story and the struggles she and her husband and grandchildren have faced in adapting to building a new normal, she reaffirms that there is hope on the other side of a challenging situation. Her clear advice is extremely practical and research-based, making this book even better. At the end of each chapter, our author gives us a bullet point list of the main takeaways of the chapter. These points will be beneficial for grandparents who may be feeling overwhelmed.

I genuinely have nothing to say negatively about this book. I think that this book will make a monumental difference to a grandparent raising grandchildren. Hodgson's writing is captivating and keeps you engaged throughout the entire book. I felt like I got to know her and her family’s personalities while reading.

I would rate this book 4 out of 4 stars. The content in this book was exceptional. I chose to read this book because I am interested in developmental psychology. I would have never believed a book about grandparents raising grandchildren would leave me so emotional while still delving into developmental psychology. I found no grammar or spelling errors, and the author’s style was effortless to read. Honestly, I cannot recommend the book enough.

I would recommend this book to anyone who is raising their grandchildren. I would also recommend this book to grandparents who aren’t raising their grandchildren. Also, I recommend it to new parents as well. There is enough content in this book that can pertain to all these groups that I think it’s worth wild for anyone raising or on the periphery of raising kids to read. I wouldn’t recommend this book to people who don’t have an interest in raising children or developmental psychology. I have already recommended this book to my mother, a grandmother, because I think she will enjoy it very much.
