Review of Sex-Positive Parenting
We live in a world where sex-related topics are one of the most avoided topics. Yet, somehow, sex is one activity that is engaged in most by individuals. I have always found this very baffling and ridiculous. Anthena Sales, in Sex-Positive Parenting, set out to do away with this mindset. Anthena’s target audience is parents. Their children are the beneficiaries of the information in this book.
The author wrote about various topics that parents must teach or discuss with their children in the world today. This will help them increase their knowledge and make informed choices as they grow. Consequently, it will help them navigate life. Separated into chapters, Anthena wrote about diverse subjects, like “media literacy,” “sex education,” “intimacy,” “identity,” “consent,” and “positive body awareness,” just to mention a few. She mentioned the importance of introducing them to kids and the methods of introducing them to the various age ranges of children.
I have come across many books tilting towards sex education for adults, but none for children. This, however, doesn’t mean there is none for children, as I did not do any research to that effect. Consequently, I was amazed by Anthena Sales’ Sex-Positive Parenting, as I found it to be a unique and timely read.
I loved that the author did not merely mandate readers to act a certain way or adopt a practice. Rather, she introduced a recommended practice, explained how to go about it, and even gave illustrations for a better understanding of the readers. For example (with regard to illustration), she wrote about teaching kids about the identification of various body parts without going into details. To make readers understand it well, she wrote that it’s the same way we may explain that the death of someone entails they are no longer around, without explaining body decay.
The author repeated some sentences on page 43 verbatim on page 44. While this may be a flaw, I do not consider it substantial enough to deduct a star. Apart from this, there was nothing else I found off-putting. However, I found a few minor errors, so the book was professionally edited.
I believe that the level of information in this book if adopted and applied by parents, will help to shape informed kids, who will become informed adults. This, and the above positive comments, form the basis of my rating of this book, which is four out of four stars.
Parents interested in raising informed kids will regard this book as one of their most important helpful possessions. Therefore, I recommend it to them.
