Oscillating between joy and sorrow, loss and victory – Winning the War on Cancer is a rare book that deals with the topic of the fight against cancer in a unique and interesting manner. The book centres around the life of Sylvie Beljanski, the daughter of Dr Mirko Beljanski, who gets on a quest to carry her father’s legacy and discover a natural cure for cancer. The author of the book, Sylvie Beljanski, a lawyer by profession, does a good job not only of narrating her courageous story but also of educating a reader on the science of medicine pertaining to cancer.

The book starts with a rather bizarre attempt by the French authorities to obliterate the findings of Dr Beljanski and prosecute him in the process. The military and the police team up in full gear to seize all cancer-related research materials they could find in Dr Beljanski’s lab – Dr Beljanski himself is detained. Upon hearing the news, Sylvie Beljanski is petrified and this sets forth a chain of events which ultimately culminate in Slyvie Beljanski’s commitment to prove her father’s innocence and continue exploring his research and findings even after his death. The narration is pretty much vivid and enthralling.

The science that was championed by Dr Beljanski was the simple use of plant extracts to treat cancer. The extracts discovered by Dr Beljanski, Pao Pereira and Rauwolfia Vomitoria, can be used against cancer without encountering the side effects generated by chemotherapy and radiation. The extracts worked against pancreatic cancer stem cells and ovarian cancer stem cells. Interestingly, the extracts can also cure infertility – the author narrated a story of how her father gave some Rauwolfia to a farmer whose pigs struggled to bear piglets – the farmer came back happy and sarcastically complained that he had too many piglets. Apparently, the extract worked with human beings and Dr Beljanski had helped some couples with the issue of infertility.

The book is as entertaining as it is educational. Sylvie Beljanski is obviously an astute writer and a good storyteller. Her writing and storytelling skills make the book very engaging. Moreover, the approach of the book makes the issue of cancer understandable to a layperson. I would rate the book 4 out of 4 stars – it is professionally written and contains no errors. Although the book contains some technical material, this does not detract anything from the simplicity of the book. I found the book very entertaining, and the unfolding of the events left me on tenterhooks.

Winning the War on Cancer is a must-read for every person suffering from the disease of cancer. Students of medicine and oncology would find so much to learn from the book. I would also recommend the book to anyone who is interested in the field of natural medicine and herbs. Finally, if you are interested in reading an educative and engaging book, this is definitely a good choice.
