Review of Let's Help You Self-Help!
Let's Help You Self-Help! : An Inspirational, Passionate Handbook for Your Path is a guide to happiness written by a recovering patient. Anthony Jacob Braaten has been through Bipolar disorder, post traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) as well as attention deficit/hyperactive disorder which is famously abbreviated as ADHD. In the book, he shares twelve skills that he learned over the years in order to help people get through any mental health.
The twelve skills are briefly packed and each given a chapter thus making the guide easy to read. The writer gives a disclaimer that he is neither a doctor of psychology nor is he a monk but a patient who is eager to get better and therefore, he writes this guide based on his own experiences. Through sharing personal experiences, I was able to relate with the author.
The book is simple but effective. The author uses simple English and therefore the reader doesn't need a dictionary while reading this guide. It also encourages one to get in the habit of journalling by providing space ( champion's log) at the end of each chapter. I love quotes and I was fascinated by the way each chapter starts with a quote from famous people. I felt the quote was like a summary of what I should expect in the following pages. The inclusion of a fascinating fact after every chapter made my reading of the book fun and memorable. Apart from a few repetition of a few words like "champion " and "my friend", which I believe the author repeated to create rapport with the reader, I didn't find any negative aspects in the book.
I rate this book 4 out 4 stars because it is professionally edited, well organised and is without errors. It consists of few pages and therefore the author is brief in his explanations of the different skills and one doesn't get bored by addition of unnecessary jargon. The author has also written the book in a way that the reader doesn't have to follow a certain sequence. They can jump to the skill they feel they need to develop first then come back and read to develop the rest.
I recommend this book to anyone who is willing and wants to develop the skills of willpower, love, gratitude ,forgiveness, kindness, exploration, adaptation, limitation, expression, creativity, contribution and passion. If you're afflicted with self doubt and you're finding it difficult to let go of a traumatic past, this book will go a long way in helping you. Finally, any reader who believes that happiness is from within and you can get it by developing a few skills for yourself then this book is for you.
