Review of Taking Charge: Vol. 2 More Stories on Aging Boldly
Taking Charge Volume 2: More Stories on Aging Boldly by Herb Weiss analyzes how the elderly are treated. The author demonstrates the differences between the younger and older generations today. It is pointed out that people of the younger generation are accpeted more easily into society because of their knowledge of technology. Throughout this story, Herb Weiss talks about many different reasons that the elderly experience distress today. Examples of these issues include unemployment, medical problems, loneliness, scams, and so on.
Not only does this book address the treatment of the older generation, but it also addresses the people who care for them. This can include family members, friends, or even nurses. They go through just as much hardship taking care of their loved ones. There are so many different things that can cause anxiety, stress, or depression to both sides. Suggestions on how to ease these struggles are presented. We should be looking for ways to make things easier and create a happier environment for the older generation.
I liked that this book showed the challenges of both the older generation and the younger generation. It does seem like the elderly struggle more with technology because they didn't grow up with it. Many of the issues that were presented, I was already aware of. However, there were some things that surprised me. I was surprised at some of the scams that the elderly are vulnerable to. I appreciated how the heartache of the caretakers was addressed too. We all go through that sadness of seeing someone we love grow older. It can be a challenge to become caretakers of those loved ones, especially when medical issues are involved.
This isn't necessarily a bad thing, but the book is very factual. There is a lot of data presented. I appreciate this for accuracy, but I think I would have also liked more stories. This was my only issue, and it will not affect my rating because it's a personal preference.
Anybody would enjoy this book. Most of us are in one of these situations right now. Either you are an elderly person facing these frustrations, or someone you love is. I would highly recommend this book.
I rate Taking Charge Volume 2: More Stories on Aging Boldly by Herb Weiss 4 out of 4 stars. There is so much to learn from the information in this book.
