Review of Sales At The Top Floor
Sales At The Top Floor is a guide to succeeding in the business of sales, which I’ve learned is a very lucrative field. The author, Gary Gustafson, is a successful businessman in the areas of sales, sales management, and marketing, and through this book, he shares the knowledge of success and failure that he has acquired over the years.
The topics in this book were arranged systematically, from the aspect of internal assessment to external disposition. The author starts by imploring the reader to assess their personal strengths and weaknesses as well as the necessary characteristics that a successful salesperson must have, and he repeatedly points out that every desirable character can be learned, just like any skill. As the book progresses, the author discusses more specific topics like time management, control, and negotiation. Foremost of all, I learned from this book that “getting along with people” is not enough for success in the world of sales.
What I found most pleasing about the practical and honest content of this book is that it could be applied to virtually any other area of business. One such encompassing statement was: “Any long-term success in sales will be built around a relationship between talent and application.” Another equally pleasing and easily noticeable thing about this book was the author’s liking for quotes; there were countless thought-inducing quotes in this book, of which my favorite was: “He was one of those men who possesses almost every gift, except the gift of the power to use them.”
Sales At The Top Floor was an encouraging read of about forty pages, and I would highly recommend it for a start to anyone venturing into sales or to any youngster in sales. Anyone with an interest in business might also pick up this book, as sales is a very crucial aspect of any business.
This book would have earned a perfect rating, were it not for a couple of hitches. Most importantly, I noticed quite a number of errors in the book, although they were not grievous as to interrupt my reading. Nonetheless, this book could use some proofreading. The second hitch was the book’s choppy formatting; there was plenty of unnecessary white space at the end of every few pages. Finally and more subjectively, I didn’t find the book to be as conversational as the author stated it would be; it felt more like a packed presentation, which made the book seem longer than it actually was. I believe breaking each chapter into smaller units or sub-topics will lighten the reading and assimilation of this informative book. Considering all that I’ve said, I’ll rate this book 3 out of 4 stars.
