Michael C. Higgins, Ph.D.'s book Exploring Wine Regions-Bordeaux, France: Discover Wine, Food, Castles, and the French Way of Life is the result of three years of labor. Readers of this outstanding book will learn not only about the wine industry in Bordeaux and France, but also about the history, geography, and culture of this region of the world, in over 500 pages. The book includes nearly a thousand high-quality images as well as 29 maps that help readers unfamiliar with the terrain of the south of France as well as winemaking and maturation techniques.

This book is nothing like the wine encyclopedia I expected. The author visited a significant number of wineries, choosing them based on characteristics such as openness to the public for visits and the ability to give wine experiences to their guests on their premises. Patient readers will learn many intriguing things as they become acquainted with the six red wine grapes of Bordeaux. In 1787, for example, Thomas Jefferson, the American ambassador to France at the time, visited Bordeaux and sampled the local wines. Wine lovers will be interested to learn that a typical Bordeaux-style wine barrel holds 225 liters of wine, which is enough for exactly 300 bottles.

Exploring Wine Regions-Bordeaux, France: Discover Wine, Food, Castles, and the French Way of Life is notable for the author's meticulous attention to detail. This method allowed readers to experience the pleasures of Bordeaux firsthand as much as possible through the book. While learning about the many types of terroir found in some of the region's 60 appellations, readers will also learn about the charms of Bordeaux, as well as other important information, cultural content, gourmet and tourism offerings, and much more. The many tours offered by various châteaus, ranging from general and group tours to private tours in which a small number of tourists are guests of one of the château's key persons, are also deserving of recognition. A considerable percentage of châteaux date back at least several centuries, therefore the book is rich in original architectural marvels in addition to excellent natural beauty. The château made of limestone blocks, which is now enclosed by a modern glass structure to preserve it, is undoubtedly one of the most interesting.

Exploring Wine Regions-Bordeaux, France: Discover Wine, Food, Castles, and the French Way of Life is an interesting book. There are only a few typos hardly worth highlighting.

I give the book Exploring Wine Regions-Bordeaux, France: Discover Wine, Food, Castles, and the French Way of Life four out of four stars with great delight. This book is an exceptional investment because of its well-organized content, high-quality images, and the author's focus on both the broad picture and the minutiae.

I recommend the book to travelers, wine aficionados, readers who enjoy learning about different landscapes, cultures, and histories, and gourmets interested in learning more about Bordeaux's gastronomic and oenological offerings.
