Until I Smile At You by Peter Jennings is a book chronicling the life and rise to fame of Canadian legend Ruth Lowe. She was associated with the likes of Tommy Dorsey and Frank Sinatra in her lifetime. Ruth was a Canadian Jewish songwriter who rose to stardom in her days for singlehandedly writing the lyrics and music of "I'll Never Smile Again," which was performed by Tommy Dorsey and Orchestra and crooned by Frank Sinatra. She wrote the song after losing her first husband, Harold Cohen, not too long into their marriage. She also wrote the theme song "Put Your Dreams Away" for Frank Sinatra. She was not always famous, and this book gives us an insight into her life before and after writing the big hit song.

This book gave a well-detailed look into the life of Ruth Lowe. The author did a great job compiling and putting out this incredible body of work. The narrations and inputs from those who had the honor and opportunity of having a close relationship with the Canadian legend were also well detailed, giving the reader a personal look into her interesting life. It also portrayed the lives of music maestro Tommy Dorsey and the sensational Frank Sinatra. It taught a lot of values like perseverance which was shown by the life of Ruth Lowe. The pictures added by the author in various parts of the book also did an excellent job of validating the story. Until I Smile At You by Peter Jennings enjoyed exceptional editing as there were no grammatical errors in the book.

I did not quite appreciate the arrangement of the story. It was well arranged, for the most part, but I feel it should have been arranged better. Some of the stories should have come before the others in order to create a perfect sequential arrangement for the book. The opinions of the music experts should have been filtered to include just the important and necessary parts so as to keep things precise and to keep the readers interested.

I believe the book is deserving of a rating of 3 out of 4 stars. The deducted star is as a result of the arrangement of the book and the opinions of experts, as I already stated. Meanwhile, it will not be rated lower because, despite the issues, it is still a great book.

I recommend Until I Smile At You by Peter Jennings to music lovers. This also includes lovers of music history, especially as it pertains to classical and popular music. They will find a lot of priceless and interesting information in this story because it gives an insight into the lives of some of our popular musicians. Young minds should read it too so as to learn about this accomplished songwriter and appreciate her art.
