Are leaders made or born? Find out in the book titled Leadership by Major General Craig B. Whelden.

Major General Craig Whelden created the book after an accomplished career in military and government leadership. It highlights the good approaches to getting the best out of people and getting work done well in any organization. He started the book by writing about his father’s legacy while at war and ended it with his own legacy. Furthermore, he wrote that character is the basic building block for every leader. He then explained the various other topics critical to successful leadership. They include "effective communication," "breaking down cultural barriers," "managing risk," understanding change, the importance of trust, loyalty to subordinates and the organisation, and many other topics. From the explanations, leaders will understand why they should adopt these qualities.

This book has so many positive aspects. It is so informative that it can help aspiring leaders or those who are already leaders to become exceptional leaders. Furthermore, I loved how the author organized this book into twenty-four short chapters. I also loved that the various chapters had relevant titles and quotes from various leaders or scholars.

I loved that the author analysed the specific characteristics of a leader using his own life experiences in service as examples. This made it easier for the reader to relate to and understand the message intended to be passed across. This is even more commendable because I do not have a military background.

Lastly, some of the author’s views were exceptional to me. I’d love to share them here. According to the author, “learn something from every leader you encounter, especially the bad ones.” He also wrote that “let your greatest legacy be that you pass on the best-of-breed leadership traits you’ve learned from others.”

Overall, there is really a lot to learn, which will help others grow professionally and effectively in any organization.

In addition to this book being an exciting book to read, the editing was superb. I did not find any errors. Therefore, the book was exceptionally well-edited. Despite the fact that I was careful in reading this book, I could not pinpoint any negative aspect of it. Due to the above, I’m rating this book four out of four stars.

I recommend this book not only to those aspiring to be leaders or those already leaders but also to the public. This is because we lead one way or the other (even in our homes). So this book would really change our perspective on leadership and help us do so much better.
