Exploring Wine Regions – Bordeaux France by Michael C. Higgins explores the rich history of wines from the region of Bordeaux in France. First, Higgins details an extensive history of the area and the changes made to the region that contributed to the quality of wines produced in this area. Thereafter, he details each area of the Bordeaux region and looks at the type of wine produced in that specific area as well as the qualities of the wine and the reasons for these qualities. He talks about soil composition, temperatures, rain fall and many more factors that influence the growth of the vines and the taste of the end product.

It is clear from the outset that an immense amount of research has gone into the making of this book. The details are staggering and the knowledge of the Bordeaux area is vast. The photography was done by the author as well and speaks of professionalism. The pictures are well composed, of high quality and simply beautiful to look at. Higgins uses labels, tables, maps and other devices that complement his writing and add to the detail. Higgins looks at the names of wine farms that belong to each area in Bordeaux and what type of wine that farm is famous for. In addition, Higgins details historical events that were important to the development of that farm.

The only negative is something small. There are many French words in this book as expected of a book about French wines. While some words are immediately translated and some words are translated in an index at the end of the book, many words are left untranslated. A person who cannot read French will spend a lot of time translating words when reading this book.

This book is highly deserving of its 4 out of 4 stars. The book contains professional photography, is highly researched and has impeccable editing. The issue of translating French words is a small issue in comparison to the positive points of this book and did not prevent me from enjoying the book.

This book is a reference book detailing the different wines that come from the Bordeaux region in France. There is no profanity of any nature in both English and French. The book contains no graphic imagery. This book is suitable for adults who enjoy wine or students that need to do research on wines. This book, and the wines contained in the book, are not suitable for children.
