Review of A Dream For Peace
A Dream For Peace by Ghoulem Berrah is a non-fiction personal memoir portraying the author's story as a freedom fighter in his home country Algeria. The anecdote propels us back to the time of colonialism in Africa. It clearly shows different kinds of things that happened during that time. This story is compiled in seventeen chapters. It covers 644 pages. The story examines diverse topics which include; politics, health, love, enmity, and racism to mention but a few.
The reading of this book is very informative and passionate. I discovered many things about the political dynamics in Africa. It is richly detailed and could easily serve as a teaching tool for a twentieth-century history class. The author indeed had a storied life. We are talking about a life that each one of us would love to live. Although The author encountered a lot of adversities, he did not give up on his goal. Some extraordinary life the author lived are listed below; he was a special advisor to President Houphouet Boigny of Côte d'Ivoire, an ambassador, politician, activist, spiritual man, and a doctor to mention but a few. You can ask yourself, “how did this man become a presidential advisor in another country, yet he was an Algerian?”. Well, I tell you what, this book has that answer. Just as I mentioned earlier that he met a lot of hardships, one of the author's narrow escapes that convinced me about his determination to his goal was when he ran away from the French official and went to seek asylum in Spain without travel and identification documents. He was also determined to face the Spanish police officers.
I enjoyed the inspirational quotes that punctuated the text. These strengthened the author’s message and were also uplifting. The characters used were actual and well-built. This simplified the flow of the text. The inclusion of magnificent pictures from different moments in history consequently played a vital role in the positive outcome of this book. The author's tribute to his wife and his persistence in insisting on how much he loved her, makes it my favourite.
Honestly speaking, there is nothing to dislike about this book. The story followed in chronological order with simple English. This made the text easy to understand. I did not notice any single error hence making it professionally edited. On that point, I rate the book 4 out of 4 stars.
Due to its informative nature, I recommend this insightful book to readers who want to be inspired toward a meaningful life, and also to those who would like to be informed about colonialism in Africa.
