Review of The First Time Father
The First Time Father is a book written to help today’s father navigate the parenting role. The author, Alfie Thomas, a father of three children compiles information and incorporates his own experiences into three parts. In the first part he provides guidance to the father on how to make his partner comfortable and ease the pregnancy period as the mother advances through the three trimesters. The second part shows the father how to care for the partner while in labor- what to watch out for, what to do and what not to do. Finally, he guides the father on what to expect in the early years of the child and family life.
The first thing I noticed and enjoyed about the book is that it has short introductory nuggets for each chapter. Another good thing about the book is that Alfie really details each part of the book with vivid descriptions of his experiences. For instance, the labor scene or his experience with diaper change felt so real I didn’t even have to use my imagination because the picture is drawn by his words. Last but not least, Alfie writes with humor, which helps soften the uncomfortable parts. I love that he has made the learning fun, but still provides accurate statistics and practical examples from his personal experiences.
There is nothing I hated about this book. Furthermore, the author is keen to note that these are only guidelines and that each situation calls for its independent assessment.
The book is well written and Alfie has done his research with the statistics. With this book, a father can be comfortable enough to tackle the journey of fatherhood. Also, the book is not hefty, it is written in fairly simple terminologies and any foreign or technical word is explained. There are minimal typing errors and overall, the book is well written. Therefore, I rate the book 4 out of 4 stars.
I would recommend The First Time Father for men planning for children- there is some good information for aspiring dads for financial preparation purposes and insight into what to expect moving forward. For men whose partners are pregnant, it would be useful to have some information handy as you go through the pregnancy journey, and why you may be having the same symptoms as your partner. I would also recommend it for the mom- to- be since the information provided by the author is for the benefit and easement of the process for the father, mother and child. Finally, the book is recommended for mature audiences because of the nature of topics discussed by the author, that is, child-bearing and labor.
