Review of A Dream For Peace
Ghoulem Berrah's memoir, A Dream For Peace, details his desire and heartfelt plea for unity and peace. He was born in Algeria, a French colony in a place notorious for recurrent security lapses. He gives detailed accounts of what he faced while growing up, his education, and his life experiences during the country's journey towards independence. The book gives a string of events in the author’s life throughout the fight for the independence of his country. He got a scholarship to study in France, where he did not stop his political activism. He aimed at moving masses where they did not fall into his good arms at times. He talks of a police pursuit in which he fled to Spain but was arrested upon arrival. As a medical student, he managed to balance the affairs of his country and his studies. At a young age, his voice and determination had moved the masses so that he was able to represent Algeria overseas and even meet the world’s bigwigs. He also took part in research where his results had an impact on science. His dream was to acquire independence and the national sovereignty of his country. The characters he posed throughout his childhood helped him become a mass-moving politician, doctor, and diplomat.
The author's writing style was captivating. He explained his life's major accomplishments and made them humble. The memoir delivers a detailed narrative, and reading it helped me visualize a scene in my head every time he described it. His country's yearning for peace was effectively expressed. I liked the fact that I didn't get lost while reading. The book's portrayal of emotions was superb. I could sense his country's passion, love, and drive, as well as his inner tranquility.
The only problem I encountered with the book was the association names and their abbreviations. I had to always refer to the first instance where the association names had been mentioned to understand the mentioned acronyms. It was a bit tedious.
My rating for this book is 4 out of 4 stars . The author's vivid description painted a true image of the colonial era, something that is rarely mentioned in historical texts. The behind-the-scenes look at the struggle and fight provided a unique perspective that was not only educational but also aided in appreciating the rich post-colonial era. The book revealed specific secrets of what freedom warriors had to go through in order to redeem their nations, which is motivating. The book's editing was superb.
This is a book I would recommend to history lovers who want to learn more about what occurred to others during their fight for independence. It's a fascinating and well-written memoir. It's a fantastic resource for teaching about Africa's battle for freedom in history classes.
