I'd want to begin by saying that the book is fantastic and one of the best I've read. I wish I had read the book 20 years earlier. It begins with the author's trip from Africa to the United States, where he overcame significant racial challenges to achieve success in every field, even at the pinnacle of his profession. I find it depressing when someone's professionalism is questioned based solely on their skin tone. Even more intriguing was the fact that he had to deal with racism in countries where it is less prevalent than in the United States. Readers, especially those of color, can benefit from his insightful advice on how to deal with the challenges they face on a daily basis at work (racism, jealously, envy, refusal and denial).

All people of color should read this book as well, because we must recognize that we will be challenged at every level in our culture, even when we match up or don't match up, and I feel that every medical student should read it. Dr. Frank Douglas was clearly a world-class scientist, yet he still had to deal with obstacles. The second lesson he learnt was that he was able to overcome each challenge without allowing it to defeat him. He didn't lose focus on his goal. He was quite specific about the goals he set for himself, and he devised creative ways to overcome the challenges that stood in his way. "Communication" and "effective communication" were two of the most important factors in his success. He had the appropriate connections, was straightforward in his dealings, asked probing questions, and pushed the boundaries of conventional wisdom. The people he trusted were consulted before high-level meetings, and he didn't hesitate to call on them for advice.

My rating on this book is 4 out of 4.
