Review of Don't Mind Me, I'm Just Having a Bad Life
In Don't Mind Me, I'm Just Having A Bad Life, Lewis Kempfer takes us on a journey of his life all the way from his early childhood to his late adulthood. He shows us all parts of his life the good and bad. A strained childhood, an abusive father, depression and self harm, the divorce of his parents that causes financial problems and moving houses a lot and not so good step fathers, being gay and all that comes with it and his career from dropping out of college to working at restaurants, to singing,to acting,to management to opening his own theatre and later landing his dream job at Disneyland. He tells us all about his relationships from when all he had were crushes and fantasies to all the boyfriends and one night stands to marriages. He shares with us all the adventures from him moving states a lot all the good and bad memories, the good and bad experiences and the heartbreaks and we get to feel all these intense emotions with him. He shares about his addiction to meth and all the consequences that came with it and how he eventually quit and was clean and doesn't fail to show us the role religion played in it. This is after showing us his struggles with religion and Christianity and the understanding of God and Jesus. At the end he talks about the death of his step brother and later how he moves back home to Colorado.
The thing I loved most about the memoir was how Lewis Kempfer overcame his meth addiction and later on how he deals with his Christianity dilemma. He tells us all about his addiction from how it started to how he fed the addiction to all the highs and lows and eventually getting clean. He also shows us his spiritual side from going to church with his parents as a child and how he struggled with his beliefs and the understanding of God Jesus and Christianity, to having a religious boyfriend,to his experience with psychics and how he later tries to get an understanding of Christianity and the good and bad that came with it. I also loved the way he let us in on all the good times and the heartbreaks and its amazing how I got to feel all these intense emotions with him.
The memoir tells us all about the relationships he had in his life family, sexual, intimate, personal, mutual and professional and all the challenges and mostly abuse either physical, emotional, financial and mental and I think the author developed a pattern and in the memoir he did not show in depth how he or if he tried to get help or get out of the pattern of abuse. He shows us how he tries to deal with drug addiction, religion, his career but not the abuse and this is my only negative in the book.
I rate the memoir 4 out of 4 because the book had no grammatical errors and because I loved the way Lewis Kempfer opens up about his life and how I got to feel all the highs and lows with him.
I would recommend the book to anyone who feels like they have had it rough in life and they feel like no one understands them. Whether it is depression, addiction or abuse I think you will find a friend in Lewis Kempfer's words.
