The Cadence of Excellent: Key Habits of Effective Sales Managers by Matthew McDarby is a non-fiction book that talks about strategies that sales managers can use to guide their team in order to achieve better results.

In this book of less than 100 pages, McDarby explains mistakes sales managers are making, which often leads to poor selling practice. The mistake includes believing that closing deals should be the key aspect they base their time on. McDarby divided this book into two segments which are inward focused tasks and outward focused tasks. In the inward focus task, the author talks about how sales managers can improve their skills and performance, while the outward focused task talks about how they can improve their team’s performance.

There are several lessons from this book. I like how the author writes several company interviews and experiences down in this book for sales managers to learn from. The author also writes challenges and mistakes he faces as a sales manager and lessons others can learn from it.

I also like how this book contains criteria sales managers must look out for before hiring someone to be part of their sales team. This would help the team manager to look out for the best team that is open to learning. I love what the author says on page 13 that “Selling is about influence, and coaching is about influence. Therefore, coaching is a great deal like selling. In fact, I will go one step further to say that coaching is selling.” This word, with the simple explanation of how he said it, changed the way I viewed coaching.

This book is really interesting and straightforward to the point. I love how this book contains several questions sales managers must consider for every action they intend to take. This will help them achieve their goal and improve their skills as a sales manager. At the end of this book is a planner that helps put everything that had been discussed throughout this book into practice. I enjoyed reading this book, and I didn’t find any negative things about it. The author’s writing style was conversational.

The editorial team did well. This book was edited exceptionally. Therefore, I would rate it four out of four stars. I would recommend it to sales managers that want to improve their skill and performance. Business owners looking forward to hiring a sales team will also have a swell time reading this book.
