Review of A Dream For Peace
A Dream for Peace is a book that is filled with the themes of courage, love, struggle, perseverance, determination and triumph. The book is a memoir that traces the life of Ghoulem Berrah, an Algerian who fought for the independence of Algeria. The author of the book, Dr Ghoulem Berrah, is an extraordinary man who, apart from fighting for the independence of his country, achieved many things as a scholar.
Dr Ghoulem Berrah was born in a small town in the province of Constantine in Algeria. This was during the time that France had annexed Algeria as part of its land. As a medical student in France, Dr Ghoulem started activism in favour of the independence of Algeria. He later travelled to the United States as a Fulbright Scholar where he started doing research in Biological Sciences. He achieved a lot as a medical researcher, which ultimately led him to be listed among the American Men of Science. After that, he ventured into a political career as a diplomat, leading him to meet the renowned Mao Zedong of China. Dr Ghoulem Berrah became a massive advocate of peace, brokering several peace agreements among countries in conflict.
A Dream for Peace is a professionally written book and I didn’t find any errors in it. What I like most about the book is that it is inspiring—the life of Dr Ghoulem was very extraordinary and it inspires a spirit of service to others and selflessness. While reading the book, I learned so much about historical events and about many places around the world. The book also taught me much about African political dynamics, particularly at the time before many African countries attained independence. This made the book very educative. I also like the way the writer narrates the story, simple and easy to follow. Reading such a long book can be dreary and tedious, hence I found the occasional insertion of pictures very refreshing and made the story relatable.
What I don’t like about the book is the multiplicity of French names. I struggled with correctly reading and pronouncing them. This is the only thing that I didn’t like about the book, hence I will rate it 4 out of 4 stars.
I would primarily recommend the book to those who like reading memoirs. Those who like books about history, medical research and politics would find this book extremely enjoyable. In addition, those who enjoy educative non-fiction books would also enjoy this book. I really enjoyed the book and I think most people would find it to be a good read.
