28 Disastrous Dates: A (Mostly True) Humourous Memoir written by Poppy Mortimer is not only a funny read, but in its own unique way almost a self-help book. In this book the author, mostly, lightheartedly tells of some not great to some truly horrendous dates she has endured over the span of twenty years. She speaks on the changes not only that she sees in herself and her preferences over the years, but also on the changes in the ways the world views dating. To finish it out, each date comes with a short life lesson she learns and how she wants to improve herself in the instances which she has control over.

Poppy Mortimer is extremely relatable in the struggles she has gone through; whether it is how a prospective significant other, a standing relationship, or she herself views her worth or choices. She grows significantly throughout the book learning what she expects out of a relationship and herself; giving some good advice along the way. She builds on her dreams and aspirations throughout the twenty year span she details for readers, and learns she does not need to hinge any of them on whether or not she is connected to a man.

I found nothing I would consider truly negative about this book. My only concern to perspective readers is that some of these dates are truly horrendous. As a thoughtful author though, Poppy Mortimer does include several trigger warnings. Whether they are because the individual is just plain gross or the date includes or borders on abusive behaviors.

The author’s sense of humor is incredible as well. She has some truly great nicknames for the men whose decisions lead them to star in this book. She also includes a slew of puns and innuendo for male genitalia, and does all this without truly swearing. I would highly recommend this book to an audience interested in adult humor and/or romance style novels. While most everything is wrapped in innuendo and the word bleep; it is still heavily featured. That being said, if you are looking for just a funny read some of these stories will appeal to you. Many however are much deeper and highlight how selfish choices can impact others.

I would rate 28 Disastrous Dates: A (Mostly True) Humourous Memoir written by Poppy Mortimer 4 out of 4 stars. I found the book to be well written and professionally edited. Full of not only the humor it presents at face value, but also life lessons that most all of us could benefit from. Whether that is as a new way of thinking or a reminder of who we are and what we are worth as individuals.
