Through the book, SMART love, the author Vincent Fudge Ⅱ, presents his personal experiences of how he navigated his way through the toxicity of his marriage, along with his wife, and got not only the two of them but their children too, out of a dark place. The author takes saving his marriage with his wife as a project, on which he effectively works on. And he shares his journey and insights with his readers. He introduces a very functional and effectual concept of SMART love and SMART commitment, along with various other methodologies of relational development.

The book elaborates on the journey, the author and his wife take on for saving their marriage as well as for bettering themselves as individuals. The author, in the book, focuses on the particular one-year journey and what challenges they faced in their marriage. He explains the incidents as well as their past decisions which got them to the place they were at. He portrays the implementation of his SMART love project and how It helped them. There are relevant examples and explanations given in the book, which makes it easier to understand. He presents the gradual and eventual process of coming off from a toxic place, accepting the good and the bad, working continuously to improve the relationship and moving toward an aligned goal.

The methods of relational development are very practical according to me, as they have been implemented as well as experimented with by the author, and he has tried to portray the result and the consequence along with the setbacks in the rawest form possible and that for me is one of the best parts about the book. Another thing that I really like is, how the author has made this book more than just a mere non-fiction book. Teaching something through real-life experiences and by telling a story of his own life, he has made the book way more interesting and easy to grasp. Their journey has been portrayed in a very unpredictable way, which makes the book a little hard to keep away. Also, adding little quotes here and there, within the book, gives it a witty element.

The experiences of their marriage have been written from the perspective of only the author, which may seem a little unfair at times, but what overlaps that is the fact that he gives genuine explanations every time and also accepts his mistakes when he realizes that he was wrong. So, that won’t exactly be counted as a negative aspect for me, as the author has tried his best to keep the book and himself as real as possible and that can be seen in his writing.

On the whole, I would rate this book 4 out of 4 stars because of how seamlessly interesting and intellectual it is. And, also because there is definitely a lot to learn from this book. The book has been very well edited.

I would recommend this book to every couple out there who is willing to save or improve their relationship. The tested methods and the advice given in the book will certainly be of so much help to anyone who is in a relationship and wants to thrive in it. I personally really like the book, it is for sure worth reading.
