Orchids are a diverse plant family distributed throughout the world. Their major characteristic is the possession of attractive and colorful flowers. They have uses ranging from aesthetics, medicinal and cosmetic. This book, Windowsill Orchid Growing, is a practical guide on how to domesticate orchids and successfully grow them at home. The author, Susan Makar, is a veteran of growing orchids as she has been growing orchids for decades. In this book, the author takes the reader on tips to identify an orchid that will bloom properly. She also makes recommendations on how to source orchids to be grown at home. From there, she talks about species of orchids that a person can grow at home with less stress. From there, she moves to address the specific requirements of popular orchid species. Here, she highlights factors affecting the performance of orchids. These factors include lighting, humidity, watering, temperature, fertilizer and potting media. She takes on these factors and explains how to identify optimum and deficiency situations of these factors.

The author has simplified the art of growing orchids in this book. I love the fact that the book is spiced up with pictorial illustrations of the concepts discussed. This brings life to the book and gives the reader a wider understanding of the technical concepts. I also love the fact that the author wrote the book in a very simple and direct language. This makes the book easy to read and appreciate the world of orchids.

There is nothing to dislike in this book. It is a book on a subject that is not relatively popular. The author was able to deliver on the subject without getting a reader bored along the line. Her descriptive and expository capacity is highly commendable.

This book is excellently edited. I did not find any grammatical errors or typos in the course of reading the book. I rate the book 4 out of 4 stars. This is because the author is able to grab a reader's attention with her superior writing ability. I now personally appreciate orchids and hope to grow them.

This book is specially recommended for people specialising in horticulture. The horticultural practices taught in this book can help expand their knowledge base. It is also specially recommended for florists and gardeners. The contents of the book can help them expand their operations as they can add different species of orchids to their collection of flowers.
