Defining Moments of a Free Man from a Black Stream by Dr. Frank L. Douglas will probably remain as one of the most impactful books I have ever read. At one point, I could barely hold back my tears as I was overwhelmed by emotions. Dr. Frank writes very candidly about his life, from British Guiana to becoming an American citizen. His achievements make him seem to have superhuman capabilities.

He navigates through numerous challenges of the 60s, such as the impact of colonialism and the struggle for independence; the crises of leadership that bedevil these new countries; and the thorny issue of racism, especially in the USA, where the author had immigrated for the purpose of his education. Dr. Frank handles all these challenges very diligently and doesn't shy off from standing for the right thing or what he believes in, as was the case with his resignation from MIT.

After his immigration to the USA, he gets his PhD and later a medical degree that sets him up for a career in research not only in America but also continental Europe. His contributions to the pharmaceutical industry are enormous and will probably be felt for generations. To find out more about the hugely talented Dr. Frank Douglas, you must get yourself a copy of this marvelous book.

First and foremost, I would like to applaud the editors as I found only minimal errors in the book. This contributed to the overall beauty of the book. I loved how the author was vivid in his elucidations. Dr. Frank describes all the events in detail, helping the reader to create a mental picture of what is happening at each particular stage of the book. He also utilizes flashback and flashforward to great effect. This keeps the reader in suspense and looking forward to what is to happen next. This makes the book interesting. The diction used in the book is also really easy to understand, which is of great help to readers who might not be very conversant with English.

There is nothing in particular to dislike about the book. A memoir can be difficult to read, but not this one. The author has found a way to keep it interesting. Although there are small references to the Christian religion in the book, I believe the book is appropriate for all beliefs. I also really hope there is a forum where the reader can get to interact with Dr. Frank.

I rate the book 4 out of 4 stars. This is because the book is well written and as captivating as it is motivating. I would recommend the book to those who enjoy reading memoirs, innovators, and also people engaged in various forms of activism to impact society positively.
