E. Alan Fleischauer’s Reconfigurement is a comprehensive financial guide to planning for retirement. Its name comes from the author’s concept of reconfigurement, where individuals plan early for every element of their post-working lives since this transition requires vast readjustments. Among the topics covered are retirement programs and plans, budgeting income, life insurance, social security, investing, health insurance, disability, assisted living facilities, wills, and potential job opportunities for retirees. Any one of these topics would be dense enough to fill an entire book’s pages, and yet, this ambitious guide seeks to cover each of them with fundamental lessons that will give readers an overview of what should be considered regarding retirement. To that end, I believe it does an excellent job.

The strengths of the book are easily recognizable. Each of the topics addressed in the book are incredibly important and practically useful for everyone. The author masterfully takes difficult-to-understand concepts like Roth IRAs or 401(k) plans and presents them in an enjoyable and simplistic format that conveys essential information while also keeping readers engaged. The book is also brimming with helpful resources that can be consulted for deeper dives into any particular subject. As someone who knew very little about financial matters of retirement, this guide elucidated the complexities of retirement planning and will undoubtedly be one of my go-to sources for information as I detail my own reconfigurement process.

There are very few limitations of the guide. I would have liked for the organization to be a tad better. The chapters are titled by number instead of topic, which makes finding specific tidbits of information somewhat challenging. There were a handful of grammatical errors, and the formatting of text images can be slightly jarring at times, but these nitpicks do not detract substantially from the work. Some may take issue with the frequent jokes made by the author as being irrelevant or cringeworthy, but I found them to bring levity to an otherwise heavy and bland subject matter.

I cannot recommend this book enough for anyone in need of assistance with their retirement planning. It really is an invaluable resource, and its utility cannot be overstated. Those not ready to retire may write the guide off as not being pertinent to their current lives, but the entire point of Reconfigurement is that planning early is necessary in today’s economic landscape, and I agree wholeheartedly. Even those who see retirement as a far-off reality should take planning seriously and should pick up the book for sound financial wisdom. There is a small level of profanity in the book as it is written in a casual style for adults, so those sensitive to such language might want to find another source. Overall though, the book’s themes are widely applicable to all.

In sum, I give the book 4 out of 4 stars. I cannot conceive of a better resource for retirement planning, and I am grateful that I found the book when I did. I’ve been inspired to start planning my own retirement. I’ll definitely check out the additional resources referenced in the guide as well. I suggest that readers do the same.

Retirement is something that requires planning from an early stage. The author did well to write this book. It would remind people like me to start now to plan my retirement. Thanks for a good review.
