Defining Moments of a Free Man from a Black Stream is an autobiography by Dr. Frank L. Douglas. The 336-page book is the autobiography of a young man who experienced poverty before becoming a well-recognized pharmaceutical scientist.

Dr. Frank L. Douglas shares the story of his life in this book. His childhood, youth, struggles, and most importantly, the major turning points of his life. He takes us through his life as a child born in Guiana to a single mother. He shared a single small room with his mother and siblings, which also served as a workspace for his mother. Blessed with intelligence, Frank took his studies seriously and, with the help of his Uncle and wonderful teachers, was able to get through high school. He gets admission into Lehigh University to study Engineering, where things become much more complicated than he ever thought. He is plunged into a new world of racism, politics, Academia, religious turmoil, etc. However, Frank chose to enjoy the mystery of the journey of his life, but where exactly will it take him?

Frank is an extremely impressive person. I have to agree with his mother when she said he was blessed. He is a brave person; despite the kind of condition he was born in, coupled with the situation surrounding his birth, he didn't let them stop him from becoming a free man. He faced all the obstacles that came heads on. He is a fantastic leader, and the prejudice against his ethnicity couldn't dispute that. I honestly don't know how he didn't lose hope and give it all up. My mood was very dark while reading; imagine the mood of Frank, who was experiencing it. Although he grew up in a colonized country, I observed that Frank was quite sheltered from different forms of oppression. He couldn't understand the racist Christians or the need for a women's organization. His drive and pure soul were his greatest weapons against a world that didn't want him.

I like the cover of the book, it looks lovely. The reviews at the beginning of the book were a very excellent addition, especially for a reviewer like me. I had to laugh out loud when I saw the Yoruba names of his grandchildren; I was immediately reminded of being told Nigerians were everywhere recently. Good people make the world go round; indeed, his teachers at Cambridge Academy were a clear example, unlike the teachers at Queens College, who saw him as less and undeserving. I advise everyone to be like Mr. K, whose motto was to "Treat others as you would like to be treated."

There is nothing I dislike about Defining Moments of a Free Man from a Black Stream. Therefore, I rate the book 4 out of 4 stars. It is exceptionally well edited and satisfying to read. I recommend this book to individuals looking for a push in the right direction. Also, aspiring scientists can learn one or two lessons from it.
