Whether you are a young person just entering college or the workforce or an older person looking to change your career and prepare for retirement, you may be feeling at odds regarding what direction you should take. Reconfigurement is a guidebook by E. Alan Fleischauer made to help seekers with important decisions leading to a more fulfilled life.

The book is well-written and appears to be professionally edited. I could find no errors in the text. There were two aspects of the book that I really appreciated. I liked the author’s sense of humor and friendly style and I liked the recommendations for the personality tests. Although I have taken many personality tests over the years, they can still be helpful in assessing one’s current state of mind as well as which path to pursue if one is feeling stuck.

The book is also helpful for people with artistic inclinations who are looking for a line of work they can tolerate while pursuing their true passion. If one’s “day job,” so to speak, is making them so miserable that it kills all their ambition, said job isn’t a good fit.

I wish that I had access to the career assessment test when I was younger. I might have steered away from the sorts of jobs that my family pushed me towards, which ended up being sources of misery and may have ended up in a more technical line of work that would have been more enjoyable for me.

In my case, I scored very low on the social and conventional portion of the test and markedly high on artistic and investigative. This doesn’t mean I’m antisocial, it means that jobs with a lot of customer contact are a bad fit. I was much happier working alone at night as an emergency contact person in the retirement community where I was employed for close to eleven years than I was working the floor as a nurse’s aide. This sort of thing is important knowledge to have when choosing a job or career.

The one criticism I have of the book is some of the resources are outdated. For instance, I was unable to take the PAIRIN assessment recommended by the author. At this point, it appears that people can only take this assessment if they are given a code by an employer or instructor. This was somewhat surprising as the book has a 2022 copyright date. I advise the author to check the links given in the book and ensure that they lead the reader to the correct place.

Overall, Reconfigurement is a smart, fun, friendly, and well-written resource applicable to people of all ages. I give the book four out of four stars.
