Beneath Sun & Stars by Cherrie Palmer is a collection of poetry that depicts different scenes in nature. It has a plethora of different types of poems. It includes free verse, haiku, waka, and rhyming poems. However, this is not an exclusive list. Each poem captured a different moment in nature, though there was not an overarching plot to the collection. It was simply tied together by the theme of nature and capturing the beauty of the outdoors in words. It covered different seasons, different weather patterns, and different places in nature. Each poem was different enough from the others that I did not feel as though any two were too similar that they felt redundant.

My favorite part of this collection was the vivid language used. Palmer painted a vivid picture in my mind of the different aspects of nature that were being described. One of my favorite poems opened with the line, "Evening light sashays across center stage" (pg 19). As a former ballerina, this line drew me into the poem, and it remains one of my favorites from the collection. Another favorite line is from later in the collection; "Ruffling skirts of yellow and green waltzes on a gentle breath" (pg 46). I feel as though these lines highlight Palmer's ability to create vivid descriptions.

There was nothing I disliked about this collection. I feel as though it was laid out in a logical manner, and I enjoyed reading the different poems. They all seemed to come alive in my mind. I also only spotted one error in the book. I believe this collection was professionally edited.

I am happy to award this book 4 out of 4 stars. Though collections of poetry are often shorter than a traditional novel, the depth of detail gives potential readers a lot to digest when reading this collection. Reading this collection also gives a tour of nature and the different seasons, which is a wonderful time.

There is no strong language in this book, making it suitable for a wide range of readers. I would recommend this to fans of poetry and nature. I feel as though the language is easy enough for those thirteen and up to understand. Those who enjoy analyzing poetry will be able to find a deeper meaning in many of the poems. However, those who simply want to enjoy language will also be able to enjoy this collection.
