Society is advancing and as a human race we are becoming more and more aware of the way the world works. Such advances in technology have left many of us choosing connivence over our health. OUCH! The Pain of Modern Civilization by Dr. Ajay Issar and Alka Issar shines a light on how the advancing of civilization is having a direct effect on our health. Though there are many “health” books on the market, this one is a step above. Ajay and Alka Issar’s way of teaching through their writing is amazing. Even when it gets into the nitty gritty of the science terms and inner workings of the body, they have the perfect way of breaking it down into easy-to-understand ideas.

This book shows as an advanced civilization we need to look at how the choices we make effect our health. Chronic illness can be prevented or if you are already suffering, they can be managed and even reversed. Nutrition, Exercise, sleep and stress management play a big role in staying happy and healthy. Understanding how the body processes the kinds of food we eat helps us to stop illness before they hit. I think that many people today overlook how sleep and stress affect us as well. And finding ways to work healthier habits into our lives is made simpler with the logs and trackers included in this book.

There were many positive aspects of this book for me. The first is the graphics and additional logs, charts and even recipes that are included in this book. There is so much information in the book but the way it is broken down and shown visibly is a great factor in helping digest the information. This is one book I will be keeping on my shelf. I also appreciate the inclusion of mental health and individual stories that show you how to begin a healthier lifestyle.

The one negative comment that I have is that this book is heavy with many medical/scientific terms and can be a bit confusing. It is defiantly a slow reader that you have to take your time to full grasp some of the terms. Even with that being said I can say that this was enough to remove a star from my rating.

I give this book 4 stars out of 4 stars. I would recommend this book to anyone looking to improve their quality of life especially those who may already be struggling with chronic diseases. I did not find any errors in the text and looks to be professionally printed. In summary I highly enjoyed reading and taking notes on such a thoughtful and informative book. The perspective that this book has is unique and has helped me see my health under a different lens.
