Review of The Drug-Free Sleep Solution: The Four-Week Program for Overcoming Insomnia Using Cognitive Behavioral Therap
David Durocher's The Drug-Free Sleep Solution, as the name suggests, is a short guide for anyone struggling with sleep disorders like insomnia. I took my time reading this book and decided to follow the steps in real time to see if it works to fix my sleep schedule. From my personal experience, it did absolute wonders for me.
The book is a concise guide, and the steps are fairly easy to follow. The author has given a small list of easy tasks to follow coupled with CBT. Cognitive Behavioral Therapy is a common method to train our minds to build habits or change mindsets. The book begins with an introduction to different types of insomnia and other sleep-related problems. It is followed by a guide to follow this guide book. Durocher had given a table for us to identify the chapters and their corresponding weeks.
There could be countless positive aspects to list about this book. For starters, it is divided into easy to understand and concise chapters. The whole process is just four weeks long. Personally, I started seeing incredible results within three weeks. Anyone can read and follow it for an overall better sleeping experience. You can use some of these techniques in different areas of your life. For example, breathing exercises can be used to calm your mind, not just before sleep, but also before an important meeting or event. I use a few of these just to calm my mind from worries. Furthermore, bedtime stretches help you lose the tension in your body.
I could not find any negatives as such, but the book does have a few citations of case studies and numbers, along with accounts of different sleep problems. These can be skipped over by the readers if they want, even though the book is under 60 pages and is a quick read.
The Drug-Free Sleep Solution is definitely one of the best self-help books I have read. I would give it a perfect 4 out of 4 rating.
I recommend this book for anyone who wants to improve their sleep patterns or the quality of their sleep. It's not just for people suffering from insomnia and such, but also to improve your sleep experience and/or sleep schedule. The cited studies and numbers are based in America, but the problem persists throughout the world. This book is definitely something we need if we are a victim of the toxic hustle culture's belief that less sleep means more success.
Disclaimer, this book is not a substitute for medical advice. Durocher has given this disclaimer in the book itself, but I would like to reiterate it. If you are struggling and need professional help, kindly go and seek it. You can still use the book as an addition, since there are no side effects of any of the given techniques.
