Review of A Dream For Peace
A Dream for Peace by Dr. Ghoulem Berrah is a memoir that tells the journey of Dr. Ghoulem Berrah fought for the independence of his country, Algeria, and neighboring Morocco, from French colonial rule. In addition, this book also describes Berrah's participation in the pursuit of peace, justice, and people's welfare, through his role as an advisor to the president of Ivory Coast. Furthermore, it also tells about Dr. Berrah's volunteer service to the community by visiting towns to provide medical care, supervising and donating to the construction of mosques and churches, helping people find jobs, securing scholarships for some students in Africa, and so forth.
Dr. Berrah was born in Algeria in 1938 and raised by a caring mother. Since Berrah was a child, Berrah's mother made sure that Berrah could understand the Qur'an and Islam well and had a good education at school. Young Berrah left the country of his birth to study in France with a determination in his heart that he would return and liberate his country from French colonial rule. Berrah cooperated with his comrades from other colonized countries to fight against the invaders who had imposed undue hardship on them. Although Berrah endured many hardships, such as going to prison, his passion for liberating his country never faded and his faith in God remained strong. After being released from prison, Berrah took up arms with the resistance in Morocco to carry out an attack on the French state. In this brutal battle, Berrah witnessed bloodshed and psychiatric trauma among his compatriots. Their struggle was not in vain. Long story short, after some years of fighting, the countries of Algeria and Morocco won their independence.
Berrah was studying Microbiology in the USA when Algeria gained independence. Berrah's struggle did not stop there. He still had so many dreams to achieve. He was determined to eradicate racism and serve Africa. After finishing his doctorate program in Microbiology, Berrah was appointed an advisor to the Foreign Ministry of Ivory Coast by President Houphouët-Boigny. Berrah and President Houphouët became very close, and they shared the same disposition, which was to serve those in need. He was soon promoted to the position of Special Advisor to President Houphouët. Berrah was dispatched to many diplomatic missions, such as repairing the relationship between the president of Ivory Coast and the president of Algeria, organizing the first meeting between Israelis and Palestinians, helping other colonized countries gain their independence, and so forth. Furthermore, Berrah and President Houphouët worked together to provide accommodation for refugees, help Ivorian students to get a better education, promote peace between religions and races, and build the Ivorian economy.
There are many things I like about this book. First, the author interestingly describes the social and cultural life in Algeria, such as the existence of different clans in each region, which turns out to be similar to my culture in Indonesia. Second, I learned a lot of new things from this book, such as the terminology and concepts in the world of diplomacy and politics. I also learned a lot about the history of France and its colonies, especially Algeria and Morocco. Third, this book is truly an eye-opener. I got goosebumps when I read the details of the struggles of the freedom fighters of Algeria and Morocco. This made me appreciate the services of the freedom fighters, including freedom fighters in my own country. I am also motivated to work and fight harder to be useful to many people because my predecessors have struggled to create comfortable conditions I can enjoy now. Dr. Ghoulem Berrah himself was a very inspiring figure. He was diligent, steadfast despite many insults, and always ready to serve his country. He was a leader at heart and always took his duties seriously. He has done so many things to serve Africa and to seek peace between religions, races, and nations.
There's nothing I don't like about this book. This book is very well organized, informative, and exciting. Although I found some grammatical errors, that is not a worthy reason to reduce one star from the rating score. Therefore, this book deserves a rating of 4 out of 4 stars. I recommend this memoir for history lovers, especially regarding the history of the independence war in Africa. This book is also suitable for people who want to increase their knowledge in the fields of diplomacy and politics. Most importantly, this book really inspires people to be tolerant of different religious communities, not to discriminate between races, and to work together to create a peaceful world for humans to live in.
