Review of How To Not Make Adulting Suck A Desperate Parents’ Guide to Boosting Teen Independence Using Tips in Per
How To Not Make Adulting Suck by I.C. Farias is a book geared toward helping parents build and maintain better relationships with their teenage children. The book recognizes that the teen years are usually hard on both parents and teenagers, but the proper knowledge can make it easier. The book first explores how parents can connect with their children by communicating with them. This connection can be built in many ways, but the established trust between teens and parents will result. As teenagers grow into adulthood, the author states that they need to learn survival skills to help them seamlessly transition into independence. One of these skills is money management. Other skills may be unpopular but equally important. Read the book to find out more.
The layout of this book made it an easy read. The points were clearly stated and mainly in a bullet-point format that would enable the reader to pick the information at a glance. What I loved about this book was that the author expanded his points with practical examples that showed how they could manifest in the real world. It also gave the book a conversational feel.
This book was filled with many gems of wisdom that would be useful for parents and teenagers. The book explored useful topics usually overlooked in today's society, like finances, mental health, sex education, and building quality relationships with one's kids. One of the most impactful discussions would be the part about managing finances. Schools would hardly teach personal finances and investments in classrooms. This book could close this void. A continuous healthy cycle would hopefully be initiated by keeping parents and teenagers informed. It was a practical book designed to render actual help to all parties involved.
An absolving validation came from the author's declaration that parents were not expected to be perfect. This would be a balm for many parents who would feel they were getting it wrong with their kids. At the same time, the book would equip them with the knowledge to get better at it. Also, reading it was even easier with the subtle humor the author incorporated in the book. An example was when the author added a quote from Elle Woods in Legally Blonde: "Exercise gives you endorphins. Endorphins make you happy. Happy people just don't kill their husbands." It was good humor that would get a chuckle from the reader.
This book is a must-read that every home should have on its shelf. It is helpful and instructive, and there is no part of it that I don't like. It is also well edited. I recommend How To Not Make Adulting Suck to parents and teenagers, and I rate it four out of four stars.
