Every country has those individuals who form an integral part of its history, especially its political history. Such individuals are always held in high regard and extolled in history books and the young generations are urged to follow in their footsteps. Dr Ghoulem Berrah is one of the people who with no doubt, fall in the category of renowned men as far as the history of Algeria is concerned. In the book A Dream for Peace: An Ambassador’s Memoir, written by Dr Ghoulem Berrah himself, he outlines his life story as a student activist, a scientist and later a prominent diplomat.

The turbulent and fascinating life of Dr Ghoulem Berrah starts with his student activism in favour of the independence of Algeria. He came into contact with like-minded colleagues who also fought fiercely for the independence of Algeria and later he managed to represent the Algerian Liberation Front. He took some sort of hiatus from political activism when he went to the United States to continue his medical studies and there, he carried out some groundbreaking research in Biological Sciences. Despite his success in Biological Sciences, he later resuscitated his political career, accepting an offer to become the advisor to Cote d’Ivoire’s president. He fought relentlessly in favour of world peace, especially advocating for peace in the Israel-Palestinian conflict.

Reading A Dream for Peace: An Ambassador’s Memoir, is extremely captivating, and the author’s writing style was simple and perspicuous. Moreover, the book is professionally written and I didn’t find any errors in it. The journey of Dr Ghoulem Berrah, as described in the book, is inspiring and sets a good example for all aspiring medical scientists or political activists. The book’s educational value is immeasurable. I learnt a lot about colonial and post-colonial Africa and how diplomats operate. I also like that the author advocates for spiritual and honest life and that he devotes Chapter 11 attempting to expound on his faith. While the book relates much to the conflict, the author refrains from the use of profane language.

There is nothing I disliked about the book, and I only fell in love with the author’s inspiring life story. Hence, my rating for the book is 4 out of 4 stars .

The book is for readers who appreciate reading memoirs or books with a historical narrative. I also think those who are interested in things to do with Biological Sciences would love reading this book and students of politics will learn a lot from this book. It was exciting to read the book and most readers would find it fascinating.
