All of us, if not most of us, plan to retire from our formal careers at some point. What if a book gave us all the facts we needed to know about retiring and how to plan for life before and after retirement? That is exactly what Reconfigurement by E. Alan Fleischauer is about. The author is very informative about the nitty gritty involved in retirement, he tells it like it is in this book. He is very candid about the world of finances, insurance, retirement plans, and savings. As a financial and retirement planner, he helps people plan their retirements tailored to their current and future financial capabilities and the ever-fluctuating economy. In this book, he reaches out to anyone who has ever thought of retiring and/or is in the process of retiring.

I liked how he talked about real problems that every household, rich or poor, has. That helped me relate to the book. The book's endless puns, witty remarks, jokes, and sarcasm kept me engaged. He knows how to grab and keep a reader’s attention. In one chapter, he emphasized the need to read and understand insurance policies to know what we’re getting out of them. For me, the importance of disability insurance was my biggest lesson. I didn’t know it was that important. But looking at the examples the author gives throughout the book, I see its need and value.

I loved the author’s use of illustrations and hypotheticals to help the reader understand some financial technical language. My favorite was the story from rural Afghanistan in chapter one. I liked the lessons behind the story, it emphasized the importance of looking at every situation we face in life from both sides of the coin. Another thing that sets this book apart from any other financial planning book is that the author knows his content so well that he even knows the parts that may come off as boring, so he makes them as interesting and fun as possible. He also advises the reader to skip parts that they don’t particularly relate to. All of these incentives played a role in keeping me interested until the end.

The only downside was that most of this book had terms familiar only to American citizens. But I guess that was deliberate because the author mentioned somewhere in chapter one that the target audience was Americans. I did not find many terms relatable to my country’s financial terms and economic systems. It’s not a book that can be read and understood universally, but that’s okay, the author already knew this. So it’s not much of an issue. Nevertheless, I enjoyed it and will put it to good use. I will give this book a rating of four out of four stars because of how captivating and informative it is. It isn't easy to write about this subject in a way that does not make the reader lose interest. But E. Alan Fleischauer managed to do so through his humor and friendly tone. I only registered two errors, indicating that the book was exceptionally well-edited.

Even while I was reading, I knew exactly who would benefit significantly from reading this book; anyone interested in financial literacy. I would also recommend it to anyone working at an insurance company because that is one key aspect of Reconfigurement financial planning. Lovers of non-fiction and self-help books would like it too. And not forgetting the main target audience of the book; people planning their retirement or in the process of it.
