Giving up the Ghost, by Hilary Mantel

Post by debbiebee »

I recently read this memoir by the famous author, and it was brilliant. Her evocation of her childhood (in Norfolk, the English one!) was a wonderful creation of an area I also know well, and her fights with the medical establishment to have her healath problems recognised made me angry on her behalf. Having said that, I would have loved to have read much of what she left out, but she made a conscious choice for it not to be a 'conventional' autobiography.
It's not what you look at that matters, it's what you see.
