Review of Reconfigurement
E. Alan Fleischauer has one thing on his mind, and that is retirement. When many people reach their retirement age, they find out that their retirement plans are not enough to sustain them for long. They burn through their savings, 401(k)s, and pension because they did not have the foresight necessary to prepare them for life after retirement. Some people are forced to find work after they retire, which isn't really ideal. Reconfigurement is a book that wants to help us rethink our retirement strategies, whilst educating us on good financial planning.
This book is special. It is a fun read when it shouldn't be. I giggled many times because of the humour that was sprinkled across every single chapter, and that's the standout point of the book. The author also writes in a very unserious tone that didn't feel hefty. This is how I like to learn. My favourite teachers were those who took time to tell jokes, be playful, and bring themselves down to the level of our age so we can relate with them better. The author understands that the average person doesn't have a financial background, and so he was writing to the layman using the layman's language, whilst being silly at the same time.
What would happen to your finances today if you were incapacitated somehow? Do you love the job you do? These questions stood out to me. Sometimes we sacrifice everything to have the best paying job, and we do this at our own harm. The author is of the viewpoint that we don't have to make the most money to have the ability to retire well. I was really surprised by this because in my mind, the more money you make, the better you are able to save.
The fact that most of the humour was taken from joke websites was a little disappointing to me. I prefer original humour, but I understand that the author may not have been able to come up with original jokes to share with us. Which is fine. But for the sake of this review, I will point that out.
I rate this book 4 out of 4 stars. It's the kind of book you will read then share with those around you because it feels that important. It feels necessary and essential to growing up.
I would recommend it to college age individuals because I feel like this information should reach people before they actually start making money. When you are prepared early, you have room to make mistakes and start over, and those people who are yet to step into their careers need to be aware of the financial decisions they have to make so they can plan best for their retirement.
