E. Alan Fleischauer, a former financial advisor, warns readers that the average American is living longer and so reconfigurement is advised. “Reconfigurement” is his enlightening 80-page book with practical financial explanations and advice for Americans. The book suggests that readers travel and pursue hobbies before retirement. He provides a list of resources for generating income from home. He mentions that the costs of caring for elderly parents and one’s healthcare are unexpectedly high. He advises readers to change jobs if they are unhappy in their current job. He provides a chapter dedicated to career aptitude and choice. The American financial products he discusses include as follows: Life Protection/Life Insurance, Social Security, traditional IRAs and Roth IRAs, retirement/qualified plans (i.e. traditional defined benefit plans or pensions), and defined contribution plans like 401 (k) s and 403 (b) s.

I enjoyed the author’s relaxed style of writing. The text is written in the first person and this makes it seem like a personal conversation with your financial advisor. The author’s sense of humour and no-nonsense approach to the subject makes the book more interesting. He includes jokes and quotes printed in big text on a grey or green background, which contrasts with the text, making it easier to read. Bar graphs also create interest. I was pleasantly surprised by the inclusion of the career assessment chapter as career choice/guidance is something I am particularly interested in. His aim of including this information is to help readers choose a career that best suits them to prevent years of unhappiness in an unsuitable job. I liked his optimism and reassurance that one can reconfigure your planning at any age.

I admired how the author stresses that our ability to earn an income is an asset and this is what we need to protect. He suggests readers purchase income protection and disability insurance. I enjoyed reading about how the origins of Life Protection products began in Ancient Rome. He mentions basic advice like budgeting. Retirement is an intimidating topic. He breaks it down in a way that everyone can understand. This topic is seldom handled in this accessible way.

There is nothing I disliked about the book. Some of the jokes are a little corny, but the author does warn us about this ahead of time! This book is specifically tailored to an American audience. Unfortunately, I was not able to fully benefit from the financial advice as I am not American. This is not a criticism of the book. It will serve its purpose with American audiences very well.

The book seems to have been professionally edited as I did not spot any errors. It is a useful book written in an upbeat style. I rate it 4 out of 4 stars.

It is never too early to start planning for retirement. Even if you have left it quite late, the author reminds readers that you can “reconfigure”. I recommend this book to all American readers who have entered the workforce. Readers from other countries could benefit from some of the advice. They can research if the recommended products are available in their own countries.
