Review of 28 Disastrous Dates: A (Mostly True) Humourous Memoir
This book was the most hilarious one I have read so far in 2022, and I read a lot! 28 Disastrous Dates: A (Mostly True) Humourous Memoir by Poppy Mortimer is an empowering and engaging piece of literature that will leave you with a big smile on your face. Every chapter is a very unique and funny summary of one of her several disastrous dates, each one ending with a lesson she learned from it that is sort of amusing but at the same time teaches something valuable to the reader, too.
The book got funnier and funnier as I was reading it, and I found myself laughing out loud several times. What I liked a lot about it is that it almost felt like I was reading the author’s private diary, as each chapter starts with her age at the time, the location she was living in and how she was asked out by the man -or how, in some cases, she was the one who made the first move. My two favorite things about this book were without doubt the last section of each chapter, which the author very cleverly titled “what I learned from this date”, and the fact that she never gave away her dates’ real names, opting instead for very hilarious nicknames, such as Mr. Bat Cave, Mr. Camel Lover or Mr. Incredible Hulk -which was also my favorite chapter and the one that made me laugh out loud the most.
I’m not going to lie, I can’t find a single bad thing to say about this memoir, it is such a light and funny read and whenever I took a break from reading it, I found myself going back to it because it put such a big smile on my face and made these gloomy fall days a lot brighter!! Even though it’s a lighter kind of book, it also gives the reader some great insights on what could be considered a red flag in a date; I appreciated that aspect of it a lot because I feel like I will certainly able to benefit from those lessons in the future.
I rate this book 4 out of 4 stars but if I could I would definitely give it more than that. It deserves all the stars! It’s very well written, it flows beautifully and it looks like it was exceptionally edited, as I couldn’t find any errors in it. I am absolutely going to read it again soon! I have already bookmarked all the chapters I know I’m going to read over and over again whenever I’m feeling down, or I simply need a good laugh.
I would definitely recommend 28 Disastrous Dates: A (Mostly True) Humourous Memoir to anyone and everyone, but especially to the female audience! Seriously, go buy it right now!! Personally, I am going to buy a physical copy as soon as possible, because I want it on my bookshelf! That’s how much I loved this book!
