Review of The Jukebox Kid
The Jukebox Kid by Loren Jakobov is a fiery poetic book. The author has compiled several spirited poems addressing unique topics, which are somehow intertwined. The book has a collection of thirty poems spread across one hundred and forty-five pages. One of the themes cutting across almost all the poems is romance and unrequited love. My favorite poems were 'Goodbye Nick’ and 'It's Very Hard To Be Human (Pandemic Blues).'
The conspicuous theme that is evident in the poems is love. The author is bold enough to express love in different forms, including same-sex marriages. He also talks of current issues such as the pandemic and the situation during the lockdown. Through the poems, I deduced a myriad of feelings and thoughts. The author describes feelings of lost innocence. The message is relayed in explicit language, which was challenging to read, albeit necessary.
My favorite aspect of this book is the great flow of thoughts. The poet is intentional about the message she wants to put across. It makes the poems come alive. The words are beautifully crafted using distinct writing styles. I also appreciate the short and precise poems. The author is unapologetic and does not mince her words; she is honest and direct. The author's choice to share the most vulnerable moments is pure bliss. She gets to a point of honesty where she is not afraid of being judged. She expressed a barrage of emotions throughout the book, especially in the poem "The Jukebox Kid." Through the poem, we get a glimpse of a variety of situations the persona is involved in and how it ultimately shapes the final character.
There was nothing that I did not like about this book. It is advantageous since, in poetry, the authors are free to use diverse writing styles. It gives them the leeway to use a variety of stylistic devices. I don't know much about poetry, but I believe this book will appeal to lovers of such.
I rate this book 4 out of 4 stars. There were reasons for giving this book the perfect rating; I gave it a perfect score due to its honesty in addressing real yet dynamic issues. I did not find any errors; the book is exceptionally edited. This, being one of the first two books written by Loren, was a commendable feat.
Due to the level of explicit content, I recommend this book to adults. Due to its portrayal of same-sex love, it will appeal to members of the LGBTQ community. Lovers of brutally honest poetry will also enjoy this masterpiece.
