Review of Reconfigurement
What are your plans for the future? Are you enjoying your job? Are your savings enough for your life, post-retirement? These questions and more are investigated in Reconfigurement by E. Alan Fleischauer.
Reconfigurement's chief concern is on retirement plans and the quality of life of retirees. It explores themes like career testing, social security, investing, life protection, affordable health insurance and the value of having a 401K. The book at its core seeks to address the chasm between traditional views on retirement and the day to day financial and career reality that people face. Reconfigurement is a book on planning ahead and having a fulfilled career while having fun before and after retirement. The author, a financial advisor with more than 20 years of experience, distributes his wisdom across the book with relatable anecdotes. The books title and content originates from the Greek word, Krinein, which means turning point. The Reconfigurement financial planning system seeks to serve as a turning point for retirees.
I found the book absolutely delightful to read, it presented financial concepts in a light-hearted way that kept me motivated even when I encountered the graphs and charts. The author's sense of humor is a also a big plus; the book felt like a conversation with a really funny and smart friend. I also learned a lot from the book, particularly on savings. The examples that were given were direct and relatable and despite the books very American tone, its teachings are universal and can be applied in areas in and out of finance and retirement.
The author also states the importance of income in the reconfigurement process, and places it as a valuable prerequisite for the reconfigurement process. He also stated at the beginning of the book that the most important aspect of a person's financial life is their capacity to earn. I found this very motivational while reading, as it not only enlightened me on what should be done, but also on what I could do in regards to my financial future.
I do not have any negative comments on the book. It was very informative, and was laced with an appropriate amount of humor. The anecdotes had a sage like element to them that kept the balance between description and prescription finely tuned. The author also seemed genuinely concerned with the general growth of the reader.
I give this book a four out of four stars. It was well written and exceptionally well-edited, zero errors were found in the book. It stayed true to its mission of presenting material that helps the reader plan for retirement while enjoying the day to day.
I would recommend this book to any working class member of society, particularly people with an interest in retirement and long-term savings. I think young people will gain a lot from the wisdom of the author while getting acquainted with financial terminologies.
