[Following is an official OnlineBookClub.org review of "An Average Guy's Journey to Becoming a Millionaire" by Jeremiah DeCuir.]
Making money may or may not be easy, but the hard part is managing that money. In this book, Jeremiah DeCuir takes you through the stages through which he attained financial freedom. Growing up, he saw his mother struggle to ensure he and his brother had a good life. Seeing this stress and struggle, he determined he did not want to struggle like his mother. At that time, he envisioned getting good grades, going to college, and getting a well-paying job afterward. He eventually got a good job after college and lived his dream life. Reality struck after an incident regarding the unannounced laying off of some staff at his place of work occurred. This event led Jeremiah and his wife, Steph, to make decisions that changed their lives and status. What were these life-changing decisions?
One thing I can guarantee anyone who grabs a copy of this book, An Average Guy's Journey to Becoming a Millionaire, is that they will begin to manage their finances wisely. Jeremiah and his wife did not care at first, but they began to see things differently when reality struck. They began to prepare themselves for moments that may or may not happen. I love how organized their list of monthly income, expenses, and savings were. The author showed this in the different tables he provided in this book. The good thing is that he did not leave the readers out of the developments in the book.
I love the writing style too. He did not try to sound too formal, and everything was simple, precise, and concise. One of the great lessons I took from this book is that to have a healthy financial life, one must tackle and clear off all debts. Another lesson to be learned is that we should take risks and opportunities. Jeremiah took a step that any average person would see as insane. He took that step, and it raised his status. Finally, having a good partner who understands and supports your dreams is crucial in achieving your goals.
When I picked up this book, I was hoping to see a "grass to grace" or life hacks on how an average individual can build from scratch. I was disappointed because there was nothing like this in this book. Jeremiah and Steph had well-paying jobs, so they had better odds of living successful life. How this book was written will only appeal to a particular type of audience. It will be more valuable to people with high-paying jobs or a steady monthly income. Jeremiah's reaction to his employer was not good, and I did not enjoy reading it. I feel he should have spoken to his employer directly about how he felt instead of just having resentment toward him and purposely trying to be bad at work.
There is nothing else I disliked about this book. I found no errors while reading it, which shows that it was exceptionally edited. I will rate this book 4 out of 4 stars because it solves a problem. I know people who got good paychecks but still ended up broke. This book will help one to prevent that from happening. So, if you are struggling with managing your finances and planning to get your financial freedom, I suggest you get this book now. If you are looking for a get-rich-quick scheme, this book is not for you.
