Review of Smart Love
The non-fiction book, Smart Love by Vincent Fudge II, is a self-help memoir-type book about a married couple learning and working to fix their broken marriage. The book outlines the toxic behavior in the marriage between Edward and Ebony and the steps they took to strengthen their bond. The couple was experiencing a legal situation from a disagreement with each other, had attempted multiple separations, and had a general lack of mutual trust. It seemed as though they lost all hope for the future of their union together. In a last-ditch effort, Edward developed a year-long program to fix his marriage to Ebony, the SMART Love Project.
The project entails developing mutual visions for the relationship with specific, measurable, attainable, realistic, and time-bound (S.M.A.R.T.) goals for achieving these visions. SMART Love was not a straightforward process for the couple, and they experienced multiple situations throughout the year that could have led to the demise of their marriage. Edward received advice from Ralph at The Home Depot, who told him to find the right person and never give up on them. Edward and Ebony fought hard for each other and ultimately came out the other side of their year-long fight stronger.
I admire the author for detailing his experiences working on his marriage to benefit readers who may find themselves in similar situations. Edward's actions weren't always admirable, and he did not portray himself to be a perfect person. His account of the SMART Love Project is honest and raw. Although I am not in a similar situation, I still learned valuable communication techniques that I can apply to my marriage. The author states at the end of the book that getting married is the easy part. Staying married and being happy within that marriage is far more challenging. As a newly married person, I appreciate the author's advice and warnings.
Many people can gain valuable insight from the author's experience with marriage and apply it to their relationships. Although his specific experiences may not be relatable for all readers, Edward's SMART Love communication techniques apply to any relationship type. This book is a self-help book, and readers uninterested in bolstering their relationships may not find this book enticing. I found nothing to dislike in this book, although it is not my go-to genre.
I rate Smart Love 4 out of 4 stars. I found zero errors within the text, indicating professional editing. The author was expressive with his writing style and raw with his descriptions of events in his life. I admire the author's honesty and desire to help others with their relationships. Every person can benefit from the SMART Love ideals. I will attempt to apply some of Edward's communication advice to my marriage.
I recommend this book to readers interested in advice to strengthen their marriage or relationship with their partner. The author discusses his faith in God throughout the book, so readers with a religious background may relate more to his journey. However, I think the primary concepts can apply to readers of all religious or non-religious backgrounds. There is profanity and discussion of violence throughout this book, so I do not recommend this book to young readers.
