Review of If I Die Before I Wake
There are some important things in life that many people take for granted, and the act of caregiving is one of them. If I Die Before I Wake by Eli Shaw tells us about the trials and tribulations faced by the author, a committed caregiver, and his conquests during trying times. Right from childhood, Shaw found himself in situations where he had to care for one terminally ill person or the other. However, a particular friend, Mark, who died after a prolonged battle with HIV, inspired Shaw to write this book. Funny enough, the title of the book was a phrase regularly used by Mark at the time he was battling the virus. Furthermore, Mark's case wasn't the only one mentioned in the book; ten-year-old Charles, and many other people terminally ill in one way or the other, had their inspiring stories shared in the book. The book contains mind-blowing tales that evoke a deep sense of reflection on the fragility of human life.
A book like this has only positive things to offer. Honestly, I appreciate the way the author told the stories in this book; they felt surreal. This is a book that voices out the aspect of life that is usually silenced by most people. Many people do not speak up on the topic of loss; they remain silent because they feel that when they start to reminisce on their loss, they wouldn't be able to control their emotions. I commend the fact that even after losing his loved ones, the author didn't shut his doors as most people would. Instead, he braced himself for many other challenges that were prone to come. He fully understood what it took to be a caregiver, and after a lifelong career, he chose to share his amazing experiences with the public through this book. This book was resourceful in every sense of the word, and I greatly acknowledge the wisdom it impacts on readers. Way to go, Eli Shaw.
While reading this book, I didn't come in contact with any negative aspects concerning it. Rather, I felt that the book had a fascinating story to tell, and an important message to drive into the mind of its reader. With this knowledge, I embraced myself and was ever willing to receive the wisdom the book beheld. I enjoyed it, and I particularly believe that this book holds the key to the hearts of those who encountered loss many a time while providing care to people.
The author did an impressive job of writing this book. There were no errors in it, so I'll throw some accolades to the publishers. I'd have to admit that the book was exceptionally well edited. Its message stuck with me, and sharing such resourceful insight with other people will bring me nothing but joy. I hope this book gets to its target audience, so I'll help in its dispersal by rating it 4 out of 4 stars. It was a good read for me, and I have no doubt it will be for you too.
Even if you've not come close to taking care of someone distressed, you should still try to get yourself a copy of this book. Nobody knows tomorrow, and a loved one who is healthy today can end up contracting a terminal disease the next day. When such occasion arises, you will need something to steady yourself with. I believe that this book could turn out useful in such situations, and I hope you enjoy it. Good luck.
