Review of The First Time Father
After reading The First Time Father by Thomas Alfie, all I can say is WOW! Where was this book when I was having my children? I feel like having another baby, so my husband can read this book and do it the right way. This influential book entailed all the necessary things to do and to adequately prepare for birth, during the birthing process, and after the birth. The author decided to write a book for fathers after reading many books that were suitable only for mothers.
He spoke about his remarkable journey and how receiving his first daughter, Ella, has transformed his life. The author also provided a to-do checklist to prepare for the coming of a baby, development milestones, and guidance on dealing with new situations as a new father. He fully immersed himself in exploring the best ways to prepare himself for his first daughter. Although in his more youthful days he was sceptical about having a family and didn’t understand his friends’ choice to have one, the minute he found out his wife was pregnant, he dedicated his free time to make the process as smooth as possible for his family.
There were too many positive points in this book to list them all. Therefore, I will only list my top favourites. The bestselling author spoke about various parenting styles that I had some idea about, but the two styles that I didn't know were different were the authoritarian and the authoritative parenting styles. They sound quite similar, but they are not. Authoritarian parents are strict, expect only the best from their children, and do not bend any rules. Authoritative parents, although they are firm, will still leave room to discuss the rules with their children.
I equally enjoyed the way the author narrated his life story. He was very descriptive and I was able to vicariously experience his life along with the fascinating story. It was intensely emotional and almost too good to be a true story. There is nothing that I would improve about this book; it undoubtedly has no negative aspects. It was professionally edited, and the author deserves nothing less than four out of four stars.
This book is mainly suitable for new fathers, but I think that all fathers-to-be should read this book, even if they already have children with another on the way. This book sets the standards for the role and interests a father is supposed to have in taking care of his family. The First Time Father should be a mandatory book for all fathers to read so that this modern world will consist of more stable and happy households.
