Review of The First Time Father
Being a father for the first time can be both humbling and intensely frustrating. The First Time Father by Thomas Alfie is a thorough manual on all facets of parenting for both first-time fathers and expectant fathers. Every aspect of pregnancy, childbirth, and early childhood duties has been covered by the author in simple language. The goal of the book is to help new fathers understand what they are going through and how to make the best of it.
The book is divided into three main sections by Alfie. In the first section, he discusses how expectant fathers can help their pregnant partners. Alfie offers advice on father-child bonding through special skills in the second section. He also offers some unique advice which he refers to as the indispensable cheat sheet. The final section discusses how new fathers can look after their mental health, plan their finances, and learn some basic child-upbringing guidelines.
What I liked the most about the book was the author’s friendly tone. He has written this book from personal experience and experiences shared by other fathers. The overall tone of narration was welcoming, fun, entertaining, and at the same time, interesting. The content was relevant and informative.
There are some aspects of childbirth and upbring that might vary with different cultures. For example, care during pregnancy, diet, feeding methods for newborns, and dressing babies would vary between the East and the West. But I thought that the overall pointers, suggestions, and recommendations provided by the author would help all expecting fathers navigate through a complicated emotional journey.
There are some useful and practical tips for everyone. The sections that discuss how expecting fathers can help their pregnant partners are especially useful. They would provide dads with fresh perspectives and prepare them better emotionally. I loved how the author reinforced the fact that although pregnant women need the most care, fathers need to give equal importance to their own emotions.
There was nothing that I disliked about the book. The book is professionally edited. I did not come across any grammatical errors. I gladly rate the book 4 out of 4 stars. I thoroughly enjoyed reading the book.
I recommend the book to all expecting fathers and also experienced dads. The author maintains a conversational tone and throws in some good jokes keeping the humour alive. There are no dull moments in the book. I believe that even expecting mothers should read this book so they have a better idea of how they can support their partners as well.
