Review of 14 lessons in happiness
Happiness has always seemed elusive, especially in this current age. Humans have tried to maintain a constant state of happiness. Many books have been written on the subject. In 14 Lessons in Happiness, Gina Ross adds her input to the subject, stemming from her personal experiences in life.
Gina Ross, a solicitor and hypnotherapist, provided fourteen powerful lessons that helped her on her life journey. This was not discovered in one go but from accumulated experiences and interactions with her clients in a bid to make them live the best versions of themselves. What were these lessons? Could they be easily implemented?
The content of the book is worth the time spent reading. I appreciate the disclaimer the author put at the beginning. This acts as a way to say her words are not canon or a cure for mental issues. She adds some stories from her life where necessary to bolster her message. Everyone's life is different, and what works for one may not work for the other.
The absence of fillers was commendable. The lack of digression made for comprehensive reading. 14 Lessons in Happiness was brief, concise, and easily digested. It was a quick read, but it didn't do the book full justice because there were practical guides for each chapter that stood at the core of her message. Those guides were meant to be acted upon, not just read about, for maximum impact. I would highly recommend taking the time to enjoy the full package. Beginning every lesson with a quote that tied in with the particular lesson enhanced the book's overall point.
The lessons are centered around three core themes: meditation, introspection, and mindfulness. I've read numerous books about well-being, and 14 Lessons in Happiness reinforces the ideas I have been trying to implement in my life. My most significant take-home is on the silent treatment and comparison, which are rampant in our social media era. Also, the topic of death is enlightening; it's a subject most people don't like talking about because of its morbidity. I'm glad the author sheds some light on it.
There was nothing to dislike in the book. Gina's writing style was likable. The editing was exceptionally done, and the lack of errors was a testament to it. A rating of 4 out of 4 stars was well deserved. I would recommend 14 Lessons in Happiness to lovers of self-help books and anyone looking for ways to deal with sadness.
